IAEAREPORTABLE OCCURRENCE 87-02 Summa of Events:

W

((

At 1750 on March 15, 1987, Mr. Gene Sparks, NRC Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, was informed of the, necessity of removing the lAEA seals on the equipment hatch and on the missile shields.

This was required in order to perform inspection and maintenance activities in the reactor head area because of a buildup of boric acid in that area resulting from a leak at an instrumentation penetration pressure boundary seal.

The seals on the equipment Patch were cut at 1900 on March 15, and the seals on the missile shields were removed at approximately 1300 on March 16.

Results:

1)

There are three remaining seals on the reactor head.

The lAEA will be notified as soon as possible if these need to be removed.

2)

All four of the lAEA seals on the equipment hatch were removed and retained by FPL.

3)

Both of the lAEA seals on the missile shields were removed and retained by FPL.

==

Conclusion:==

The continuous surveillance of the reactor is being maintained by the three remaining seals on the reactor head.
