SUBJECT:
Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-440, License No. NPF-58 Supplemental Information to Compliance with NRC Order EA-12-049 (CAC No. MF0962)
On March 12, 2012, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Order EA-12-049, Order Modifying Licenses with Regard to Requirements for Mitigation Strategies for Beyond-Design-Basis External Events, to FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC).
This Order was effective immediately and directed FENOC to develop, implement, and maintain guidance and strategies to maintain or restore core cooling, containment, and spent fuel pool cooling capabilities in the event of a beyond-design-basis external event for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) as outlined in of the Order.
By letter dated August 20, 2015, FENOC provided the notification required by Section IV.C.3 of the Order that full compliance with the requirements described in Attachment 2 of the Order had been achieved for PNPP.
The following information is provided to supplement the notification.
During modification of the FLEX equipment storage area identified as FLEX Equipment Bay 1, ventilation was changed such that there is no longer forced ventilation provided.
No adverse environmental consequences are expected for the storage of equipment in this area based on weather conditions experienced during the plant life.
The building construction for FLEX Equipment Bay 1
is similar to that of FLEX Equipment Bay 2.
In addition, FLEX Equipment Bay 1 has a wall-mounted heater that provides additional margin for extreme cold outside temperatures, making the evaluation performed for FLEX Equipment Bay 2 bounding for FLEX Equipment Bay 1.
