SUBJECT:
Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Docket No. 50-412, License No. NPF-73 Commitment to Maintain Severe Accident Management Guidelines Beaver Valley Power Station P.O. Box 4 Shippingport, PA 15077 724-682-5234 Fax: 724-643-8069 The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Nuclear Strategic Issues Advisory Committee (NSIAC) recently approved an Industry Initiative to implement and maintain Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMGs). This letter establishes FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) commitments related to SAMGs for Beaver Valley Power Station Unit Nos. 1 and 2 (BVPS). These guidelines would be used by emergency response personnel during conditions in which significant damage to fuel in the reactor vessel or spent fuel pool is occurring or is imminent. SAMG strategies are intended to arrest the progression of fuel damage, maintain the capability of the containment as long as possible, and minimize radiological releases.
The new SAMG commitments are listed in the Attachment.
It is expected that NRC staff personnel will conduct periodic inspection of our Severe Accident Management Guidelines and performance deficiencies, if any, will be assessed using the Reactor Oversight Process. Inspection activities will not extend to NRC review and approval of SAMG strategies, or the use of equipment described in the SAM Gs.
If there are any questions or if additional information is required, please contact Mr. Thomas A. Lentz, Manager - Fleet Licensing, at 330-315-6810.
Sincerely,
&a~~
