Subject:

James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-333 Reactor Pressure Vessel Shell Weld Examination Proposed Alternative

Reference:

Letter from J. Knubel (NYPA) to U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC), dated May 28,1998

Dear Sir:

In the referenced letter, NYPA submitted for your review and approval an alternative plan for the examination of the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) shell welds. The following additional information supplements the referenced submittal. Attached is a sketch which identifies the estimated accessible and inaccessible portions of the FitzPatrick plant RPV shell welds, which can be examined using the GE GERIS 2000 examination equipment. Also attached is a table which lists the beltline region weld lengths and the estimated exam coverage for the associated venical and the intersecting circumferential weld. The table also contains previous RPV shell weld beltline region outer diameter inspection coverage. A sketch of the previous outer diameter exams and results is also provided.

If you have any qt.estions, please <.,ontact Mr. Art Zaremba at (315) 349-6365.

Very truly yours,

/
