l March 13, 1985 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-84-28A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE i

safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

EMERGENCY ORDER ISSUED TO ISO-TEX, CORPORATION  !

This is to provide an update and closecut to PNO-IV-84-28 isst.ed on December 6, 1984 As indicated in the initial PNO, the Texas Department of Health, bureau of Radiation Control (TDH/BRC) issued a Cease and Desist Order which required ISO-TEX, Corporation to cease processing of radioactive waste except for that destined for disposal at licensed radioactive waste disposal sites.

Effective Nrch 1,1985, the TDH/BRC issued an Emergency Order which ordered a that: (1) the licensee cease and desist from receiving additional I radioactive wastes, except for shipments of radioactive waste enroute to the licensee's Friendswood facility on the date of the Order, (?) the licensee shall physically inventory all radioactive waste drum or their equivalent volume ard provide such inventory to the IDH/BRC, and (3) at the time the licensee's inventory of radioactive waste is decreased below the 4,000 drum limit, the licensee may submit written proof that shows such and request that the TDH/BRC verify the licensee's compliance with the license conditions.

The NRC Region IV State and Governmental Affairs Staff will continue to follow up on this issue with the TDH/BRC. No further information is expected in the near term on this matter.

This inforination is current as of 12:30 p.m., March 11, 1985.
