a) Letter from J.B. Martin to G.C. Sorenson, dated May 21,1986 b) Letter G02-86-418 from G.C. Sorenson to J.B. Martin dated May 9,1986 References a) and b) documented a committment by the Supply System to complete all work to upgrade one hour cable tray fire barrier installation for safe shutdown equipment cables to three hour fire barrier capability by July 1986.
The purpose of this letter is to inform NRC Region V of the readjusted comple- '
tion date for this work and to discuss the basis for the extension.
The initial estimate of July 1986 was based on a preliminary work scope approximation of six thousand man hours made prior to actual in depth field walkdown. At the time, this estimate was thought to be conservative and have sufficient room to allow for readjustment due to unforseen complications. At present, the total manhour estimate for completion is approximately sixteen thousand five hundred manhours. A number of factors have resulted in expan-sion of the initial estimate; 1) initial estimate was based on preliminary data developed prior to field measurement or receipt of engineering criteria, g8150115860729 g p ADOCK 0500o397 ,

- 2) the impact of laborer cleanup time was underestimated, 3) the impact of installing additional material on interconnecting cable trays and conduits was not initially factored in, 4) difficulty was initially experienced in receiv-ing timely response to problem submittals from fire barrier manufacturers, and
- 5) additional work emerged based on response to problem submittals from the fire barrier manufacturers.
WNP-2 is currently pursuing completion of this task which has been and con-tinues to be a high priority item. We estimate completion of all field work by August 25, 1986. As committed to in reference a), hourly fire watch patrols will continue in all safe shutdown equipment cable areas until three hour fire barriers are established.
