The following is a summary of information received from the
California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch (
RHB) via email and phone:
On April 1, 2026, at 0536 PDT, the licensee contacted Los Angeles County Radiation Management via email to report that a route truck activated their radiation alarm at a truck transfer station. RHB later arrived and identified the nuclide as radium-226. Arrangements were made with the licensee to dump the contents of the truck and locate the radiation source.
On April 6, 2026, at 0815, RHB arrived at the transfer station to meet with the licensee. The contents of the truck were dumped and surveyed. RHB was able to locate the radioactive source, a set of five vials with "radium luminous compound" labeling on several of the vials. Definitive measurements were recorded on April 8, 2026, due to instrument issues. Background was measured at 0.007 mrem/hr. Gross exposure rate at surface was 19 mrem/hr, 1.2 mrem/hr at 1 ft, and 0.1 mrem/hr at 3 ft. The projected activity is 120 microcuries. The source was secured and will be transferred for proper disposal.
