The following is a summary of information provided by the licensee via phone:
The radiation safety officer reported that a package was received with removable gamma and beta contamination that measured at the limit of 240 disintegrations per minute per centimeter squared.
The package was a container that was being shipped back to Penn State University. The container originally contained Na-24 and was sent to a facility for disposal. The facility that returned the container has been notified and it is currently under investigation regarding how the container was returned with contamination. The container is locked in a secure facility.
Penn State personnel conducted surveys and verified no spread of contamination at the facility. The carrier was contacted and no contamination was found in the delivery vehicle. Wider contamination surveys are planned as well. No personnel were contaminated.
