On January 17, 2026, at 0030 CST, an Ir-192 brachytherapy source (4 curies) owned by Alpha Omega was involved in a vehicle incident on I-10 westbound near Whiskey Bay (mile marker 131). The source was being returned for disposal by a third-party carrier when a crash involving two tractor trailers resulted in a fire.
The source remained secure in its original shipping package throughout the incident. No radioactive release occurred, and no personnel were overexposed. LDEQ was notified immediately, and emergency response teams managed the situation. The source has been retrieved by Alpha Omega and will proceed to its intended destination. Further details will be provided after the holiday weekend.
