On 4/4/11, South
Texas Project Unit 1 was in a scheduled refueling outage with workers performing activities in the Reactor Containment Building (RCB). At 0224 [CDT], the Unit 1 control room received a report of an individual in the reactor cavity with a medical emergency. An ambulance left the site at 0400 [CDT] on 4/4/11 to transport the contaminated individual to the Matagorda Regional Medical Center. The individual was decontaminated at Matagorda Regional Medical Center. It was determined that the contamination levels on the individual were low with 400 - 500 cpm on clothing and 1200 cpm in the individual's hand. There was no spread of contamination in either the ambulance or at the hospital.
This was determined to be reportable within 8 hours9.259259e-5 days <br />0.00222 hours <br />1.322751e-5 weeks <br />3.044e-6 months <br /> as required by 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(xii).
Site Health Physics personnel accompanied the injured individual in the site-owned ambulance. Decontamination was performed by the South Texas HP technicians.
The licensee has notified the NRC Resident Inspector.
