While performing routine annual maintenance on the plant heating boiler, water that is normally discharged to the turbine building
sump was redirected through a drain to gravel just outside the turbine building. This water contained low levels of
tritium. This is a voluntary notification even though the
tritium levels were below the
EPA guidelines for drinking water and no permits were violated. No follow up action is necessary and monitoring will continue. On July 31 [2006] the site joined the industry initiative regarding lower thresholds for reporting
tritium and the ground water reassessments being completed at all nuclear plants in the industry.
Tritium level in the water was 1.91E-5 microCuries/ml.
The licensee notified the NRC Resident Inspector.
