In Generic Letter 89-08, the NRC requested power reactor licensees and construction permit holders to provide 6nformation concerning erosion / corrosion monitoring. programs. Specifically, information was requested on whether a long term erosion / corrosion monitoring program equivalent to the NUMARC program has been implemented, including procedures or administrative controls, to assure that the structural integrity of all high-energy (two phase as well as single phase) carbon steel systems is maintained.
Georgia Power Company (GPC) has developed and implemented an erosion / corrosion monitoring program for Vogtle Unit 1.
This program is described in the document "Alvin W. Vogtle Nuclear Plant Unit 1 Erosion / Corrosion Program",
which is available for NRC review at the Vogtle site.
Baseline inspections for Unit I were performed during its first refueling outage. We have reviewed the Vogtle Unit 1 program and have concluded that the current program meets the intent of the NUMARC guidelines.
We have, however, identified a few areas where strengthening of the program is appropriate in light of Generic Letter 89 08.
Revisions addressing these areas will be implemented prior to the o
second Unit 1 refueling outage. We have also identified the need for further procedural controls addressing implementation oi the program.
It has been G?C's intent to implement the erosion / corrosion monitoring program on an on. going basis; however, procedures do not explicitly require continuing implementation. We will make the necessary procedural upgrades prior to the second (Jnit i refueling outage.
An erosion / corrosion monitoring program will be developed for Unit 2 prior to its first refueling outage. This program will be equivalent to the Unit 1 program and will be subject to formal procedural controls to assure continuing implementation.
Baseline inspections for Unit 2 will be performed during its first refueling outage.

As stated above, the required actions will be completed prior to the secoral refueling outage for Unit 1, and prior to the first refueling outage for Unit 2.
These outages are scheduled to begin in February,1990, and September,1990, respectively.
