l Pursuant to Section 182 of the Atomic Energy Act,42 U.S.C. 2232 and Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) dated March 4,1997,0 the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAPCO) forwarded the Radiation Protection Improvement Plan, a CAL Commitment, on May 30,1997.<2)
As stated in the May 30,1997 letter, the Radiation Protection improvement Plan will be implemented in three phases. Phase I includes identified deficiencies which have a potential risk of affecting public or worker health and safety or compliance with federal regulations, items associated with Phase I of the Radiation Protection improvement Plan were expected to be completed by July 31,1997.
Most of the actions associated with Phase I will be complete by July 31,1997.
However, based on CYAPCO's standards and expectations for closure, completion of all necessary communication and/or training actions will require additional time beyond the end of July. As CYAF00 has stated, the objective is to provide quality program improvement. This is being accomplished by requiring considerable participation from (1)

U. S. Nucitar Regulatory Commission CY-97-078/Pega 2 supervisors and technicians in the revision and validation of procedure changes. This process is necessary and provides the desired quality product, but is very_
time-consuming. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the completion of Phase I to August 31,1997.
CYAPCO will notify the NRC in writing when each phase has been completed or if additional time is needed to complete each phase.
