SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 2 Docket No. 50-368 License No. NPF-6 Reactor Vessel Flange Leakoff Temperature Monitor

Dear Mr. Cagliardo:

This letter provides information pursuant to the conversations between Messrs. Steve Quennoz and Dan Howard of my staff and Mr. Ray Hall and yourself on June 5, 1987 regarding the recent failure of the temperature instrumentation used to monitor the ANO-2 reactor head flange leakoff line.

Per our discussions, the temperature monitoring of this line at least unce per 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
as required by Technical Specification 4.4.6.2.1(d) will not be performed until the remote instrumentation is restored to an operable status.

In lieu of monitoring the leakoff line temperature the level in i

the _ reactor drain tank will be monitored and recorded at least once per shift to assess any potential reactor vessel head 0-ring leakage.

Also, local monitoring of the line temperature inside containment will be performed at least monthly and any time a containment entry is made until the remote instrumentation is repaired.

The remote temperature instrumentation will be repaired and restored to an operable condition at the next outage

 • 3 opportunity.

These actions, in conjunction with routine RCS leak rate calculations should l

allow identification of any significant leakage via this pathway.
