SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 NUREG-0737, Item II.D.1, Performance Testing of Relief and Safety Valves

Dear Mr. Calvo:

Inletter(1CNA018702) dated January 7, 1987, NRC informed us that the manufacturcr of our power operating relief valve (Dresser Industries) recommends that heavier springs be used under the valve's main and pilot disks if the plant is operated at pressures below 100 psig to ensure closure. Although ANO-l's minimum operating pressure is below 100 psig, our operational history indicates this has not been a problem for our plant.

However, we agreed to change to the heavier springs.

In our letter (ICAN068702) dated June 12, 1987, we indicated that our plans were to change out the power operated relief valve springs under the main and pilot disks with heavier springs as recorrended by Dresser Industries.

At that time, our schedule for installation of the heavier springs was the next refueling outage (IR8).

This is to inform NRC of the difficulties we are experiencing in meeting this schedule due to the procurement lead time 1

of the springs.

We are extending the schedule for installation of the heavier springs to the (IR9) refueling outage.

Since ANO-1 has not had any leakage problems with th-PORY, we do not consider this delay to be a safety concern.

Very tr y yours Dan. Howard Manager, Licensing DRH:DB:de g
