Subject:

Request for Extension of Completion Date for Resolution of Generic Letter 2004-02 Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51

Dear Sir or Madam:

By letter dated April 30, 2008 (0CNA040804), the NRC approved an extension for actions associated with Generic Letter (GL) 2004-02, Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation During Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors, for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1 (ANO-1). This extension was requested in Entergy correspondence dated April 24, 2008 (1CAN040804) which referenced a previous extension dated November 7, 2007 (0CAN110701).

The NRC correspondence dated April 30, 2008, contained approval to complete the ANO-1 analyses in support of GL 2004-02 resolution in order to update the licensing basis by June 30, 2008, and to provide the final GL 2004-02 supplemental response by July 31, 2008. Entergy anticipates completion of the actions necessary to support GL 2004-02 resolution by June 30, 2008, with the exception of a downstream effects analysis on the high pressure injection (HPI) pump.

Due to difficulty in establishing an accurate model for the HPI pump by the original analysis vendor contracted to perform this evaluation, the evaluation has been transferred to the pump vendor with an expedited contract. Interaction with the pump vendor in an attempt to improve the delivery schedule was not successful due to a limited number of expert personnel at the pump vendor and pump vendor competing priority workload. Therefore, Entergy is not confident that the evaluation can be completed and approved to support the current schedule.

1CAN060801 Page 2 In the November 7, 2007, correspondence, Entergy provided the technical and safety basis for an extension request, and this information remains applicable. Furthermore, the safety impact of the requested extension request is minimal because Entergy does not anticipate adverse analysis results for the HPI pump. It is Entergys expectation that the HPI pump will be adequate without modification based on discussions with the pump vendor and their preliminary review of the debris loads to be addressed. Therefore, Entergy requests an extension until August 15, 2008, to finalize the analyses to support GL 2004-02 resolution including updating the ANO-1 licensing basis, and until September 15, 2008, to provide the final supplemental response.

Revised commitments contained in this submittal are summarized in the attachment. If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact me.

I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true and correct. Executed on June 19, 2008.
