ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY POST OFFICE BOX 551 UTTLE ROCK. ARKANSAS 72203 (501)371-4000 April 22, 1987 1CAN048708 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 ATTN: Mr. Jose Calvo, Director Project Directorate IV Division of Reactor Projects - III, IV, V and Special Projects

SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 10CFR50 Appendix R Exemption Request (Zone 38-Y)

Dear Mr. Calvo:

By our previous correspondence to you date August 15,1984(0CAN088404),

August 30,1985(0CAN088508), and October 20, 1986 (0CAN108608) AP&L has requested exemption from the requirements of 10CFR50 Appendix R associated with suppression and separation in the ANO-1 EFW pump room (Zone 38-Y).

These requests were based on the extremely low fire loading for the room, the installation of a one-hour rated barrier on cabling associated with the motor driven pump, the capability for manual operation of the turbine driven pump following a fire and other compensating factors. As a result of discussions with your staff and further study by AP&L we are revising our exemption request to additionally credit partial suppression in the room.

AP&L is currently studying the design of this suppression system which will provide protection to the turbine driven EFW pump. Our preliminary design will be discussed with members of your staff during the AN0-1 Fire Protection Audit scheduled to take place the week of May 4,1987. The suppression system's final design description along with a schedule for its implementation will be submitted to you later this sumner.

Very truly yours, 0704290071 070422 PDit ADOCK 05000313 . Ted Enos, Manager F PDfi Nuclear Engineering and Licensing / h JTE/DEJ [ p MEMBEA MIDOLE SOUTH UTIUT.ES GYSTEM
