On January 7,198h, at 0001 houis, the Unit 2 High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS) pump suction valve to the Suppression Pool opened' while the normal suction valve to the CY tank closed.

j l

The cause for the valve transfer was attributed to a high Suppression Pool level.

Trans fer on high Suppression Pool level is a designed function. The reason for a hi h pool level 6

was due to valve cycling and minor valve leakage. The pool level was lowered and the ncrtal HPCS suction path was reestablished.

EVENT DESCRIPTION

On January 7, 1985, at 0001, the Unit 2 High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS, BG) pump suction vrilve to the Suppression Pool opened, while the normal suction valve to the cycled condensate (KA) tank closed.

This is a norml action which results from a high Suppression Pool level (700' 1" setpoint, per Technical Specifications).

II.

CAUSE

The cause for the valve transfer was attributed to high Suppression Pool level.

When the water levelin the Suppression Pool reaches a level of 26' 91/h", the HPCS (BG) pump suction valves are designed to swap to a suction from the Suppres-sion Pool.

The HPCS system is designed to take a normal suction from the cycled condensate (KA) tank. When the cycled condensate tank level reachec a level of approximtely 5' 1" the norml suction path for the HPCS pump is changed to the Suppression Pool.

If the Suppression Pool level reaches a level of 26' 91/4", the HPCS suction valves will go to a configuration for a suction path from the Suppression Pool.

Suppression Pool level does tend to drift up due to minor valve leakages and valve cycling for operating surveillances.

III. PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OCCURRENCE The consequences of this event were minimal. The system performed 'its designed function.

IV.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

The Suppression Pool level was lowered to norml level, and the norm 1 HPCS pump suction to the cycled condensate tank was restored.

V.

PREVIOUS OCCURRENCES

LER 374/8h-078 and LER 37h/84-087 describe similar occurrences on Unit 2.
