DAMAGED RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS PACKAGE (UPDATE)

On October 22, 1998, the State of Tennessee informed Region II that a package containing 3.7 gigabecquerels (Gbq) (100 millicuries) of iodine 131 solution was run over by a forklift in an area outside the Federal Express (FedEx). hub at the Memphis, Tennessee Airport. Preliminary surveys indicated there was contamination on the tarmac, on the wheels of two forklifts, and on one individual's shoe.

FedEx took actions to isolate and control the contamination, including removal of some asphalt. Bioassays were performed on 11 employees who could have been exposed to the iodine. The results were all negative.

All contaminated materials are stored in an isolated, locked area. FedEx will have a contractor pick up the material for disposal.

Tennessee Radiation Control staff monitored FedEx's activities. This information is current as of 11:00 a.m. on October 28, 1998.
