NRC TO HOLD SECOND SET OF MEETINGS ON APPLICATION FOR TEMPORARY SPENT FUEL STORAGE FACILITY The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold public meetings April 29 in Salt Lake City and Tooele, Utah, to discuss what environmental issues should be considered on certain aspects of a proposal to construct and operate a temporary storage facility for commercial spent nuclear fuel on the reservation of the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians.

The proposal comes from Private Fuel Storage, L.L.C. (PFS).

The Salt Lake City meeting will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Ballroom of the Little America Inn, 500 South Main Street. The Tooele meeting will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Tooele High School, 240 West Second Street.

The scope of the meetings will be limited to environmental issues associated with the use and right-of-way of a proposed rail line on public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management adjacent to the Skull Valley Reservation. The rail line proposal is included in a PFS amendment request, dated August 28.

Also to be discussed are any environmental concerns associated with a proposed lease agreement--which must be approved by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs--between the Skull Valley Band and PFS that may not have been addressed in the NRC's initial process.

Each meeting will include an NRC briefing on the proposed license and a summary of the comments received at an environmental scoping meeting held last year, a Bureau of Land Management briefing on the proposed right of way and a Bureau of Indian Affairs briefing on the lease agreement.

Interested persons may register to present oral comments at the meetings by writing to Scott C. Flanders, Spent Fuel Project Office, NRC Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555.

The NRC will also accept until May 28 written comments on the issues to be discussed at the meetings. The comments should be addressed to Mr. Flanders at the above address.

PFS originally applied for a license for the proposed facility in June 1997. NRC held a public meeting in Salt Lake City last June to obtain public comments on what issues should be considered in its environmental review of the application. An opportunity was also provided for interested parties to comment in writing. At the conclusion of that process, the NRC issued a report.
