June 6, 2011 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-11-003 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.

Fort Calhoun Station Declaration of a Notification of Unusual Event Due to High River Level DESCRIPTION: The Fort Calhoun Station (FCS) declared a Notification of Unusual Event at 8:00 a.m. today, Monday, June 06, 2011. This notification was made in anticipation that the Missouri River level at the plant would reach 1004 ft Mean Sea Level (MSL) in the next two days. Present river level is at 1003 ft 2 in MSL. The US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) projects the river to crest at 1006 ft 6 in MSL in about 10 days. In accordance with the USACE, these high river levels are predicted to persist through the month of July and possibly beyond. The licensee has taken actions in response to the increase in river level in accordance with plant procedures. FCS remains in cold shutdown following completion of a planned refueling outage. The resident inspectors reviewed the licensee's efforts this weekend in preparation for the increased river levels. The resident staff has been augmented and they are providing 24-hour site coverage. The region will continue to assess the licensee's actions as the river level increases as predicted by the USACE.
Region IV received notification of this occurrence by phone from the Headquarters Operation Officer. The States of Nebraska and Iowa have been notified.
