DearMr.Crutchfield:

RochesterGasandElectrichasreviewedthepossibleeffectsofafailureofthemotor-drivenauxiliaryfeedwaterpumps,duetothepostulatedoccurrenceofahighenergylinebreakintheIntermediateBuilding,ontheClass1Eelectricalsystems,asdiscussedbelow.ThisinformationsupplementsinformationprovidedinparagraphIV-11ofRG6E'sOctober31,1980submittalconcerning"EnvironmentalQualificationofElectricalEquipment".Thepowerfeedercablesforthemotordrivenauxiliaryfeedwaterpumpsareroutedfrommotorcontrolcenters(MCC's)14and16,locatedonseparatefloorsoftheAuxiliaryBuilding,tothesepumps.ThecurrentflowineachfeedercircuitiscontrolledbyaDB-50circuitbreaker,locatedattheMCC's,withovercurrentsettingsmatchedtothepumpcharacteristicsandtheboltedfaultmagnitudeforthefeedercircuit.Anyfaultsgeneratedbyapumpfailurewillbeclearedbythesebreakers.Asinglefailureofabreakerwillaffectonlyoneofthetwosafety-related"trains".SincethebreakersandMCC'sarelocatedintheAuxiliaryBuilding,andwouldthereforenotbesubjecttotheharshhighenergylinebreakenvironment,theyarenotsubjecttoacommonmodefailure.Controlcircuitsforthe-pumpsareroutedfromtheControlRoomandRelayRoomtotheAuxiliaryBuilding.Thesecircuitsalsohaveovercurrentprotection,andarenotexposedtothehighenergylinebreakenvironment.

CmfI ROCHESTERGASANDELECTRICCORP.December15,1980Mr.DennisM.Crutchfield,ChiefSHEETNO.ItisthereforeconcludedthattheClassIEelectricalsystemswillnotbedegradedbyahighenergylinebreakintheIntermediateBuilding.Verytrulyyours,J.E.MaierJEM:ngcc:JohnArcher,FRC NIIVVv
