RE: NRC"s support for new nuclear reactor development, including small modular reactors, while communities are still burdened with the unresolved legacy of nuclear waste Date:

Dear Ms. Silva and Ms. Lampert:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your April 11,2025, letter to Chair Hanson (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML25105A096). In that letter, you shared your concerns regarding the Agencys support for new nuclear reactor development while there is no current long term repository for nuclear waste.

The NRCs role in licensing a permanent waste repository is contingent on several factors outside of NRCs control, including appropriation of funds by Congress. However, the NRC has recently received direction under the ADVANCE Act, to streamline nuclear licensing that supports advanced reactor development, and enhances the U.S. nuclear workforce and supply chain to promote clean energy innovation.

As an independent agency, the NRC will continue its long standing mission of ensuring protection of the public health and safety and the environment, as the countrys nuclear landscape evolves. Until a permanent repository is identified, the NRC will continue to perform routine inspections to ensure applicants and licensees comply with NRC regulations, the license, and approved manuals and procedures.

I appreciate your interest in the evolving nuclear landscape. If you have any additional questions or would like to schedule a meeting with cognizant decommissioning staff to discuss further, please contact myself, Marlayna Doell, Project Manager, Reactor Decommissioning Branch, Division of Decommissioning, Uranium Recovery, and Waste Programs, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, at (301) 415-3178, or via response to this email address.

Thank you and have a great rest of your week, Marlayna Doell

Marlayna Vaaler Doell
