Dear Hr. Stone:
SUBJECT:
USE OF ASHE CODE CASES 1592 AND 1481 Your letter 79ESG-2761, dated'/larch 22, 1979, to Hr. S.
S. Pawlicki, has been referred to me for response.
You have requested NRC approval for tile use of ASHE Code Case
- 1592, "Class 1
Components in Elevated Temperature
- Service,Section III, Division 1," in tt>e design of certain portions of hydrogen recombiner units for post loss-of-coolant accident cond'itions.
You also requested guidance on the necessity of NRC approval of code case revisions as you have previously received approval for use of code case 1481, "Elevated Temperature Design of
- Section III,- Division 1, Class 2 and 3 Components."
You stated that these hydro-gen recombiner units are constructed in accordance with the requirements of Section III, Division 1, Class 2 of the ASHE Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
We have completed our review of your request and have, concluded that ASHE Code Case 1592, including Revisions 1 through 14 to the code case, are acceptable for use in the construction.of hydrogen recombiner units.
Regarding Revisions 1
and 2 to Code Case
- 1481, we have reviewed Code Case 1481-1 and we find it to be acceptable for use in the construction. of hydrogen recom-biner units'e have also reviewed Code Case 1481-2 and we find it to be accept-able for use in the construction of these components;
- however, requests for approval to use this revision must indicate'the means for achieving the tame and temperature limits specified in Part (5) of the code case.
Regarding your more general question as to whether it is necessary to ask NRC approval for each specific revision of a code case, it is a utility's responsi-bility in each docket to assure that each individual component to which a code
