IE Bulletin No. 79-04, " Incorrect Weights For Swing Check Valves Manufactured by Velan Engineering Corporation", dated liarch 30, 1979, and received April 16, 1979.

Gentlemen:

This is in response to the actions requested by the above referenced IE Bulletin No. 79-04.

The individual responses which follow are numbered to correspond to the action statements in the bulletin.

1.

The Seismic Category I piping systems utilizing 3, 4, or 6 inch diameter Velan swing check valves are:

Valve #

Description System 301-95 3" CRD Return line 1500#

Control Rod Drive 301-98 301-138 2.

A review by Velan and the documented results furnished to the NSSS indicates that no drawing discrepancies regarding valve weights ever existed for Millstone Unit #1. As an example, valve 301-138, a 3 inch 1500# valve, required a recommended weight of 100 pounds.

The weight used was 350 pounds.
