Dear Mr. Muller:
Living as I do within six miles of Three Mile Island, with two young children in my family, and my wife and I both less than 40 years old, I am extremely concerned about TMI and issues related to it, particularly now clean-up.
I have been reassured to note that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has remained firm in your stand and your commitment to prepare an adequate environ-mental impact statement prior to making commitments on specific aspects of the clean-up process.
However, I get worried when I hear of public officials pressing for a quick clean-up so that the public not be needlessly exposed to uncontrolled radiation, while Met Ed is pressing for venting of Krypton gasses on a supposedly " controlled" long term basis.
There doesn't seem to be much difference here!
So I would hope that the NRC would remain firm in your commitment to a wide ranging EIS and that you would further consi-der:
establishing a citizen's advisory committee to work with you on the EIS; make monitoring devices available at conven-ient and useful locations, and provide for continual public report-ing of the readings of the devices; an updated cost / benefit analysis a serious look at the e'ffects of TMI radia-tion on the food chain / geology of this area, or in general.
I feel the great need for a public agency, with power, to be overwhelmed with concern for the short and long-term safety of the public, so that there would be at least some balancing of the economic interests which tend to disregard or regard with clear impunity the safety of the general public.
I am hopeful that the NRC will be that public agency.
Thanking you in advance for your consideration of this matter, I am, Sincerely yours,
\\
