W! lY A shipment of radioactive waste from the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant was found to have a radiation level under the vehicle which exceeded the 200 millircentgens/ hour DOT li=it when it arrived at the Richland, Washington burial site. The State of Washington informed the licensee that the site was being closed to further shipments from the plant.

The licensee stated that they had ceasured a radiation level of 180 milliroentgens/ hour in the sane area before the shipment lef t the plant.

A licensee team has been sent to the State of Washington to investigate this

=atter.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plan a press release. The State of Minnesota is being notified.

7 Region 7 will be asked to conduct ad investigation.

This event appears to be a severity level III item of noncompliance.

Regien III (Chicago) received notification of this event from the resident inspector at appro:cimately 9:10 CST on October 31, 1980.
