Environmental Technical Specifications NRC Dockets 50-295 and 50-304-

Dear Mr.'Denton:

The following information is provided at the requast of the NRC Staff for use in revision of the Zion Environmental Technical Specifications contained in Appendix B to the Operating Licenses.

Item F of Table 2.4 pertains to erosion of the Lake Michigan shoreline in the vicinity of the Zion plant.

This section was included in Zion's Technical Specification to assure follow-through on temporary erosion effe 's associated with plant mnstruction activities.

The original installation of the intake ano discharge structures and piping required a temporary breakwater and cofferdam.

These structures interrupted normal littoral drift and accretion of the beach and caused localized erosion of the shoreline.

At the time the Technical Specifications were drafted, it was predicted that the beach would be restored by natural processes when the temporary structures were removed.

This provision was included to asstre that the NRC was informed if other unknown effects prevented natural beach restoration.

In fact, the beach has been restored.

Sand has been placed in. specific areas and the natural processes have restored the general shoreline as predicted.

This section of the Technical Specification has therefore outlived its usefulness and can be deleted.

If erosion should occur in the future, any required corrective action would be approved by the:U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

If future erosion should, for some reason, threaten safe operation of the Zion plant, then the NRC would be informed according to other provisions of the Technical Specificatons.

Flease address further questions regarding this matter to this office.

Very truly yours, hka[W DY s
