Subject:

At 11:35 a.m. September 10, 1981, a two inch hole developed in a 16 inch high pressure turbine extraction steam line in the turbine building.

The plant was operating at 96*/,

power. The reactor plant was unaffected by the leak and there was no release of radic3ctivity The licensee commenced a controlled shutdown and implemented the emergency Can at the unusual event level to evacuate unnecessary personnel and account for all personnel onsite.

No injuries resulted.

The unusual event was terminated at 2:00 p.m. The resident inspectors are following the situation onsite.

The State of Maine was notified of the occurrence. The licensee has made a press release.

Media interest has occurred.

Region I will respond to media inquiries.

NRC R gion I received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident inspector at 12:00 p.m. September 10, 1981.
