The purpose of this letter is to notify the NRC in accordance with 10 CFR 20.103 (g) that the Buffalo Materials Research Center i

is in the process of implementing a Respiratory Protection f

Program for its employees.

The BMRC Respiratory Protection Program shall fall within the University at Buffalo's OHSA approved General Respiratory l

Protection Program.

This general program is administrated by the l

Environmental Health and Safety Departme'nt.

The BMRC program shall-add addition procedures and_ requirements relating to the j

use of radioactive materials.

The BNRC Program meets the requirements directed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's j

NUREG-0041 and Reg Guide 8.15, as well as the American National 1

Standards Institute guides Z88.2 and Z88.6.

t The Program addresses the use of respiratory protection equipment

for the use in. environments that are known to involve',-or may j

potentially involve airborne radioactive contamination.

"S Respiratory protection equipment will be used, if needed, during routine entry into contaminated areas (such as the Hot Cell);

{U under emergency rescue and recovery conditions; and during the-

upcoming Reactor repair work.

All respiratory protection

equipment used is MSHA or NIOSH certified.-

l Currently available equipment includes self contained breathing apparatuses, emergency escape packs, powered air purifying respirators, and a supplied air system.

A copy of the Respiratory Protection Program Manual is enclosed.
