NRC Mission Statement

The NRC licenses and regulates the Nation's civilian use of radioactive materials to provide reasonable assurance of adequate protection of public health and safety and to promote the common defense and security and to protect the environment STRATEGIC GOALS SAFETY STRATEGIC GOAL: Ensure the Safe Use of Radioactive Materials SECURITY STRATEGIC GOAL: Ensure the Secure Use of Radioactive Materials

NRC Reactor Oversight Process (ROP)

Process is implemented in each of the four NRC regions

Process involves inspection and assessment activities controlled by each NRC regions senior management

Process is implemented by regional inspectors and onsite resident NRC inspectors

Resident Inspector Program NRC Resident Inspectors live in the local communities and perform inspection activities at Browns Ferry, Sequoyah and Watts Bar Nuclear Plants Provide daily oversight of plant activity

Resident Inspector Program Daily visits to Control Room Periodic meetings with plant senior managers Prioritize inspections based on important plant activity

Resident Inspector Program Observe emergency drills and provide support to NRC decision makers for any real emergencies or urgent issues

Resident Inspector Program Process concerns raised by plant employees and the public Routinely discuss safety concerns with plant personnel and senior management

TVA operated the plant safely and in a manner that preserved the public health and safety and protected the environment

Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Findings and Performance Indicators

One Apparent Violation, 6 Green non-cited violations (NCVs), 6 Severity Level IV NCVs, and 2 Green Findings were identified in 2019.

All Performance Indicators were Green (no performance thresholds exceeded)

NRC Annual Assessment Summary Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant

Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Regulatory Response Column (Column 2) for the fourth quarter of 2019.

One Apparent Violation associated with Security Finding was identified in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Final Significance Determination of Greater than Green Finding associated with Security issued March 16, 2020 (ML20076D978).

The 95001 Supplemental Inspection will be conducted later in the year.

TVA operated the plant safely and in a manner that preserved the public health and safety and protected the environment

Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Findings and Performance Indicators

8 Green non-cited violations (NCVs) and one Severity Level IV NCV were identified in 2019.

All Performance Indicators were Green (no performance thresholds exceeded).

NRC Annual Assessment Summary Watts Bar Nuclear Plant

TVA operated the plant safely and in a manner that preserved the public health and safety and protected the environment.

Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Findings and Performance Indicators

One White Emergency Preparedness (EP) Finding, 13 Green Non-cited Violations (NCVs), and 2 Severity Level IV NCVs were identified in 2019.

White Finding letter issued on April 15, 2019.

Follow up inspection completed in September 2019.

Severity Level (SL) III Violation of 10 CFR 50.9 with Civil Penalty issued on November 19, 2019.

Follow up inspection completed in March 2020.

Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Findings and Performance Indicators

Watts Bar Units 1 and 2 were in the Licensee Response Column (Column 1) for the Fourth Quarter of 2019.

Watts Bar Units 1 and 2 were in the Regulatory Response Column (Column 2) for the First, Second, and Third Quarters of 2019 because of the White Emergency Preparedness Finding.

All Performance Indicators were Green (no performance thresholds exceeded).

Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Findings and Performance Indicators

Follow-up inspections for the Chilling Effect Letter (CEL) and 2017 Confirmatory Order (CO) completed in January and October 2019. No Violations were identified.

Still deliberating on the appropriate time to close the Watts Bar CEL and Safety Conscious Working Environment Cross Cutting Issue.

The NRC will continue to monitor TVAs activities to maintain a SCWE at Watts Bar.
