SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 DG INTAKE SILENCER INTERNALS SDAR: CP-85-48

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On December 5,1985, we verbally notified your Mr. S. Phillips of a defic _iency regarding the diesel generator intake silencer internals.

We have submitted an interim report logged TXX-4662, dated January 6, 1986.

Evaluation of this concern included disassembly and inspection of the

'DG intake silencers to ensure that the internals had been properly welded. These activities have documented the actual weldment for each of the affected parts..The welding is not as specified in the design, however, adequate weldment exists to preclude dislodgement of the part. The adequacy of existing weldment is based upon recent correspondence pro'vided by American Air Filter.

We have determined that no condition adverse to safety would exist in the event the concern had remained undetected. The issue is not reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). Records supporting this determination are available for your inspectors review at the CPSES site.

Very truly yours
