YANKEE ROWE REACTOR VESSEL SHIPMENT On Sunday, April 27, 1997, Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) will l
begin shipment of the reactor vessel for disposal.
The first phase of i
the shipment will involve a heavy haul truck from the Rowe, Massachusetts
~
site to a railway approximately six miles away near the Hoosac Tunnel.
The shipment will originate from the Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Station at i
6:00 AM.
The heavy hauler truck will travel the route at approximately 1 l
mile per hour. State. police will escort the vehicle.
l At.the tunnel location, the reactor vessel package will be transferred to a rail car designed for heavy loads.
After the transfer process is completed (approximately two days), the package will travel via a dedicated train to a site near Barnwell, South Carolina for final disposal at the low level waste site.
l The reactor vessel is packaged in a specially designed steel cask.
The cask was recently manufactured for the reactor vessel and had dimensions of 13 feet in diameter, 28 feet of length, and weight of 90 tons.
Total weight of the package (reactor vessel, low density concrete, and cask) is approximately 365 tons.
The shipment meets the requirements for a Greater Than Class A, Low Specific Activity (LSA) II package as per the Department of Transportation regulations.
The licensee reported that maximum radiation dose rates on contact with the package are approximately 100 millirem per hour at the front of the package, and dose

rates at 3 feet from the package are approximately 10 millirem per hour.
L Total radioactivity is estimated to be 3030 curies.

Specialist inspectors will continue to evaluate the licensee's activities regarding the reactor vessel shipment and will observe the shipment on Sunday, April 27, 1997.
