8-28-98 Debra Shults, Health Physics Manager for the Division of Radiological l

Health notified DRH on 8-28-98 about a stolen Troxler gauge. The gauge was apparently locked in a trunk of a vehicle that was stolen between 8 '

98 (2100 hrs) and 8-28-98 (0730 hrs). TN Rad Health has issued a press release as well as notLfying NRC Operations Center about the incident.

On 8-28-98, a Troxler Model 3411-B moisture / density gauge, Serial No.

17374, was stolen from a residence in Southaven, Mississippi.

The radioactive device was stored in the trunk of a maroon 4 door 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88, Tag # SJJ-543. A police report was filed with the Southaven Police Department. The stolen car has been entered in the National NCIC. The report identifies the gauge as part of the contents of the vehicle.

DRH also notified MEMA, MS Hwy Patrol, and Desota County Civil Defense.

Mr. Jack Harreld, RSO, of Engineering Testing Services, (901) 363-0600, stated that the device was locked in the trunk for overnight storage and when the employee awoke the next morning he discovered his car to be missing. The device was padlocked in its yellow transportation case with 2 DOT Yellow II labels attached.

As of 8:00 AM, 8-31-98, DRH had received no new information about the gauge being found.
