RADIOGRAPHY SOURCE DISCONNECT AT A TEMPORARY JOBSITE On December 8, 1997, at 12:25 p.m.,

the NRC Region I office received a request from Amersham Corporation to perform an emergency source retrieval at the Tosco Refinery in Marcus Hook, PA.

Region I staff contacted an Amersham representative for additional information.

It was determined that, while performing radiography at a temporary jobsite, a

radiography source used by MOS Inspection, Inc. (MOS), could not be retracted.

The Region I staff contacted the Corporate Radiation Safety Officer of MOS and determined that the radiography source, 62 Curies of Iridium-192, had disconnected from the radiography camera drive assembly about 8:55 a.m. on Decembei 8, 1997.

Licensee personnel have placed lead blankets over the source and are maintaining surveillance over the site. The licensee stated that radiation exposures to personnel, according to self-reading pocket dosimeters, were 20 mrem to the radiographer, 12 and

.five mrem to the assistant radiographers.

by Amersham Corporation personnel.

An inspector is being dispatched to the site to observe the recovery efforts.

The Region 1 Office of Public Affairs is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.

The information in this notification is current as of 3:00 p.m. on December 8,

1997.
