SUBJECT:
COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION D0CKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 DEFECTIVE FIRE STOP INSTALLATIONS SDAR: CP-86-34 (INTERIM REPORT)
Dear Mr. Johnson:
On May 1, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. T. F. Westerman of a deficiency where we may have exceeded the design temperature of the unexposed surface for some fire seal designs during an ASTM E-119 fire test. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
We have contacted the fire seal supplier (BISCO) and advised them of our concern regarding inadequate documentation references to comply with NRC requirements.
This issue involves approximately 1,248 seals in Unit 1 and 356 seals in Unit 2.
Receipt of supplemental information from BISCO is currently anticipated by June 6, 1986.
We are continuing our evaluation and anticipate submitting our next report by June 27, 1986.
Very truly yours,
