LOST PORTABLE GAUGE (GAUGE HAS BEEN FOUND)

A Troxler Model 3411 portable moisture / density gauge (S/N 3780) containing 8 millicuries of cesium-137 and 40 millicuries of cmericium-241 had been shipped to Fort Rucker, Alabama in 1996 for use at Smith Environmental Technologies' temporary jobsite.

The gauge was stored in a trailer at the facility.

An inventory in late November or early December 1997 of the contents of the trailer did not list the

.Troxler gauge.

A Smith representative stated that a former employee may have removed the gauge from the Fort Rucker temporary jobsite after Smith went into

' bankruptcy and employees were not paid for several weeks.

The Smith rcpresentative contacted former employees about the whereabouts of the gcuge during the week of March 8, 1998.

On March 17, 1998, Smith in ormed Region I that the missing gauge arrived on March 16, 1998 via d

. United Parcel Service at their Norristown, Pennsylvania facility.

Paparwork with the gauge indicated that the gauge was shipped from

.Danver, Colorado.

Smith and Region I are investigating the circumstances of the gauge's return.

Region I will continue its review of this incident in cooperation with the State of Alabama.

Thd Region'I Public Affairs Office is available to respond to public inquiries.
