.Subj:ct: DAMAGED PACKAGE CONTAINING 10 DINE-125 (UPDATE)
On September 27, 1989,'. Illinois Department of. Nuclear Safety inspectors found
. iodine-125 contamination on items which had been carried in a delivery truck Enear a package.of iodine.12b which was leaking when it arrived at the Great I
Lakes; Naval Training Center.
1 The contamination was on soft drink cans and packaging material which had been I
delivared.to a Wheeling, Illinois, company for use in vending machines. The 1 state inspectors collected 76 contaminated cans.and associated packaging.
Packages of candy, also carried in the delivery truck, and the vending machines
.containing the soft drinks and candy were found to be free of contamination.
Ona cmployee.at the Wheeling location was found to have low level hand Contamination, and.a second individual had possible hand contamination. Both individuals successfully removed the contamination by washing.
l l
1The driver of'the delivery truck had'previously been found to be free of contamination, but.a thyroid survey detected evidence of a small uptake of the j
radioactive iodine. Because~of the-low level involved, however, no medical u
. treatment was considered necessary.

<<The state inspectors concluded that the iodine nackage was probably damaged i
while'in the delivery vehicle --~the driver repurted that his load had shifted.
