On December 2, 1977, Chicago Mayor Bilandic met with Clifford Smith, Ernst Volgenau and others to discuss shipments of highly enriched

uranium presently being routed through O' Hare Airport.

The Mayor and the NRC agreed that no further shipments of high enriched uranium would be made out of 0' Hare Airport until the completion of a j

joint study by the Mayor's Office and NRC.

It was agreed to invite Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, Senator Adlai Stevenson, Senator Charles Percy, and Illinois Attorney General William Scott (or their representa-l tives), as well as an official of the Illinois Department of Health to e

participate in the study.

t Media interest has been heavy. Mayor Bilandic and NRC officials held a press conference after their meeting to announce the cessation of ship-ments through O' Hare and the joint study.-
