Upcoming request for State comments regarding an environmental assessment
Dear Shelly Stancil and Shelby Bergmann,
I am writing to you on behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regarding a licensing action for Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant (Hatch).
The purpose of this email is to alert you to an upcoming draft environmental assessment (EA) that the NRC will send to you in advance of a licensing decision. The NRCs licensing action associated with this EA is high-priority and time sensitive, and we plan to send you the draft EA on or before August 30, 2024. If you have any comments regarding the information in the EA or the NRCs proposed licensing action, we will request that you provide them no later than 30 days after receiving the EA.
The NRC staff is developing the EA to assess the impacts to the environment from the proposed action, which is an exemption, in accordance with section
72.7 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, from certain requirements applicable to the use of the Holtec HI-STORM 100 Cask System. Specifically, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) has requested an exemption from requirements that would prevent Hatch from being able to store spent nuclear fuel in certain storage systems that contain a design variant that has not yet been approved by the NRC.
If I have incorrectly identified you as the appropriate contacts, please direct me to the appropriate State official for review of this matter.Feel free to contact me or my colleague, Jill Caverly (copied), with any questions or concerns. Finally, could you kindly reply to this email so I know you have received it?
Sincerely, Christine Pineda
