UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 CHAIR The Honorable Gene L. Dodaro Comptroller General of the United States U.S. Government Accountability Office 441 G Street, NW.

Washington, DC 20548

Dear Mr. Dodaro:

June 24, 2024 On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your May 10, 2024, letter providing an update on the overall status of the NRC's implementation of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recommendations and highlighting those open recommendations that GAO believes the NRC should give high priority. Those recommendations are related to the security of radiological sources and the reliability of cost estimates. The Commission acknowledges GAO's concerns regarding the open recommendations and appreciates GAO's recognition that the NRC had closed a priority recommendation in the area of privacy protection. Please find in the enclosure an update on the actions that the NRC is taking to address GAO's remaining priority recommendations.

The NRC appreciates the efforts of GAO to identify opportunities to improve operations and takes each recommendation seriously. If you need additional information, please contact me or John Jolicoeur, Executive Technical Assistant, Office of the Executive Director for Operations, at (301) 415-1642 or by email to John.Jolicoeur@nrc.gov.

Enclosure:

As stated cc: M. Gaffigan, GAO S.Young, 0MBSincerely, Christopher T. Hanson
