Gentlemen:
In our June 4, 1981 letter, we transmitted information on the fuel assembly spacer grid damage observed during inspections of the fuel discharged from cycle one of ANO-2. In that letter we stated our intent to investigate the cause of the grid damage and to take corrective action prior to the next refueling. The SER accompanying Amendment 24 to the ANO-2 operating license further committed AP&L, under the Surveillance Reporting Requirements, to provide a final report describing the fuel inspection results, conclusions reached, and preventive measures to be employed in the future. To satisfy both of these commitments, we are enclosing the attached reports.
Attachment 1 presents the final fuel inspection results and conclusions.
This information supplements report CEN-164A-P which was sent with our letter dated May 22, 1981. Portions of this report are proprietary (affidavit attached) and it is requested that they be classified as proprietary information in accordance with the provisions of 10CFR2.790.
For your information, twenty (20) copies of the proprietary version, Nos. 001 through 020, and twenty (20) copies of the non propribtary version are provided.
Attachment 2 presents some additional information on the forces for grid strap damage and actions we are taking to prevent further damage.
