TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT IN NEW MEXICO '
l'e n National Response Center notified the NRC Operations Office that at about 8:00 a.m. MST on February 4, 1993, a Yellow freight Lines truck carrying radioactive material from Texas A&M University to Spectratek in Albuquerque had overturned on Interstate 40 about 60 miles east of Albuquerque, eight miles east of C11nes Corner, New Mexico. The truck was carrying three stainless steel containers of iridium-192 (2 curies) and scandium-46 (230 mil 11 curies and 350 millicuries), which are presumed but not confirmed to be intact. The truck was also carrying chemicals (chlorine and ammonia) and flammables. A chemical spill resulted from the accident, but no fire occurred.
The New Mexico State Police have kept personnel away from the accident site, due to the chemical release.-
Region IV has been in contact with the New Mexico Hazardous & Radioactive Materials Bureau, which learned of the accident at 6:25 a.m., and promptly dispatched an inspector to the site. However, the state inspector has been unable to survey the truck, because of the chemical spill.
According to the state personnel, a chemical spill response team from
- Dallas is expected to arrive at the site at about 12:30 p.m., MST. State personnel also indicated that the State Police have contacted Kirtland Air Force Base for assistance if needed.
An NRC Region IV inspector, who was inspecting in-Albuquerque, is available to-provide support to the state if needed..The state has indicated that~no assistance is needed at this time. Region IV is maintaining contact with.the state and will. provide assistance if needed.
Region IV received notification of this event at 11:13 a.m. on. february 4,1993, .and has notified both the offices of State Programs and NMSS of-l the accident.
