28063 South Woodland Road IN RESPONSE REFER l Pepper Pike, OH 44I24 TO FOIA-85-382

Dear Mrs. Herskowitz:

This is in response to your letter dated May 20, 1985, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, records regarding the location of and health detriments concerning uranium mining north of Kanab, Utah, and subsequent transportation of the uranium through Kanab into specific areas in Arizona.

The staff has informed me that there are no records subject to your request.

However, they have provided the following information to me.

Ore and the transportation thereof is not regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Only when the crushing or processing of this are begins is a license required. The mining of uranium and thorium is regulated by the individual states. Consequently, any records related to your request may be obtained by writing directly to the States of Arizona and Utah. We have enclosed a copy of the list of Agreement States to assist you. The list identifies each individual to be contacted, telephone number, and complete address.
