- 4. Status of Decontamination
- a. A licensee representative stated that decontamination of equipment and the facility had been completed. All the paint had been removed from the two presses and the rolling mill in the melt-cast area. Licensee representatives stated that the small metal liquid waste holdup tank had been cut up with a torch and the pieces placed in 55-gallon waste drums. They stated that the plastic tank had never been used due to leak problems and, consequently, did not contain any radioactive contamination. Surveys of the inside surfaces of the large metal tank showed that the contamination levels were below the guideline values.
- b. The inspector noted that there were two large and one small woeden boxes and approximately forty 55 gallon drums of radioactive contaminated waste. A licensee representative stated that the contaminated waste would be sent to a commercial burial site.
RII Ept. No. 70-1319/78-5 c. The results of the paint samples from painted equipment were discussed by the inspector, the NMSS/NRC representative and a licensee representative. Using a ratio factor of 20 for the total uranium activity to the uranium-235 activity and remeasuring the area from which the paint was removed, it was concluded that all -
the paint sample results met the release levels except for the metal lab table. A licensee representative stated that the table would be dismantled and placed in the contaminated waste.
- d. A licensee representative stated that USN would submit sketches or plots to NMSS showing the locations where surveys were taken.
After an evaluation of the survey results by NMSS shows the facility and equipment to be satisfactorily free of contamination for release, a request will be made by NMSS for Region II to conduct a verifica-tion survey.
- e. Exit Interview The decontamination status and future actions to complete decommissioning were discussed with Dr. Sam Weaver, USN, and Mr. William Crow, NMSS, at the conclusion of the inspection.
