SUMMARY
OF JUNE 4, 2021, CLOSED MEETING TO DISCUSS A NEW PROCESS TO PURIFY URANIUM AT NUCLEAR FUEL SERVICES, INC.
On June 4, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a closed meeting with Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS) to discuss a new process to purify uranium at their facility in Irwin, Tennessee. The meeting notice is available in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML21144A312 and the presentation slides are not publicly available due to the proprietary nature of the information contained there within. This was a teleconference meeting, and an attempt was made to capture a list of the attendees as they called into the meeting. The enclosed attendance list provides the attendees for the meeting as captured by the NRC staff who helped facilitate the meeting.
During the meeting, the NFS staff provided a general overview of their progress on the technical design for facility changes to support the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) contract for highly enriched uranium conversion and purification services. In addition to the general overview, NFS presented more detailed information on their consideration of:
- Integrated safety analysis, nuclear criticality safety, radiation protection, and fire safety
- Material control and accounting
- Environmental protection
- Physical security During the NFS presentations, the NRC staff asked several questions intended to raise awareness of details that may need to be more fully discussed in the future. NFS stated that they remain on track to submit the license amendment request in October or November 2021.
