OF FEBRUARY 2, 2021, PARTIALLY CLOSED MEETING WITH EXELON GENERATION COMPANY, SOUTHERN NUCLEAR COMPANY, GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL, AND THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGARDING HIGHER BURNUP AND INCREASED ENRICHMENT FOR ADVANCED BOILING WATER REACTOR FUELS (EPID L-2021-NTM-0000)
On February 2, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a partially closed teleconference meeting via Microsoft Teams with representatives from Exelon Generation Company (Exelon), Southern Nuclear Company (SNC), and Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF). The purpose of the meeting was for Exelon, SNC, GNF and the NRC staff to discuss plans for using higher burnup (HBU) and higher enrichment advanced Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fuels. The meeting was noticed on January 14, 2021, and is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML21029A173.
During the open session of the meeting industry representatives from Exelon, SNC, and GNF discussed key issues and motivation for HBU and increased enrichment (IE) for BWR fuels.
There were no questions from members of the public during the open session. During the closed session of the meeting, industry representatives from Exelon, SNC, and GNF discussed planned technical activities to support HBU BWR fuels, including risk-informed licensing approach for high burnup extension and addressed the NRC staffs questions pertaining to their licensing approach.
