STOLEN RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL SHIPPING PACKAGES

'The. U.- S. Department of Energy notified Region II today that two radioactive materials

.~ shipping-packages,: labeled as containing Plutonium, and a leak detection kit used in a

._ display during a~ transportation conference at Knoxville, Tennessee, disappeared October 31 s I

-wh:n thieves made off with the truck.

DOE said the packages and the leak detection kit disappeared when a blue Chevrolet van cperated by a contractor, Reliable Transportation Company of Knoxville, was stolen after b2ing loaded with equipment being removed at the conclusion of the conference.

Ona package was a small, 25-pound,12-inch x 12-inch stainless steel cylinder called a "Safpak." It had never arrived at.a DOE office and had no identification number on it.

Tha other shipping package was a barrel-shaped, stainless. steel _ package _which was two feet high, weighed 110 pounds and measured 18-20-inches at its widest point. It was called a

'"Safkeg" and bore identification numbers from the New Brunswick /Argonne laboratory of-P027906. The leak detection device had an identification number P027907. t

Bnth shipping packages were new and had never been used.

DOE has notified appropriate Federal and State authorities and has issued a news release.
