Dear Sir or Madam:

l This is to notify you of organizational changem at Penn State University that effect the licenses for radioactive material and the radiation safety program. Effective 4 Sep 97 the Health Physice Office will merge with the Department of-Environmental Health and Safety. The regulatory and licensing responsibilities of the radiation safety officer will be assumed by Eric J. Boeldt, Manager of Radiation Protection, in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.

Those duties had been the responsibility of Rodger W. Granlund, University-Health Physicist, who was in charge of the Health Physics Office. The Health Physics Office was one of the intercollege Research Programs under the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. Mr. Granlund will retire on 1 Oct 97.

Mr. Boeldt has served as the Associate Health Physicist since 1987 and is familiar with the radiation safety operations and the regulatory and licensing requirements. He received the M.S. degree in medical physics (health physics option) from the University of Wisconsin in 1985 and served as the Associate Health Physicist at the University of Wisconsin from 1981 to 1987. He also i served as Staff Scientist for the Wisconsin Radiation Protection Council from 1979 to 1981 and as a Nuclear Test Supervisor at General Dynamics, Electric Boat \ O ,

Division, Groton, CT from 1975_1979. He has been certified in Health Physics by '

the American Board of Health Physics since 1988. l The Manager of Radiation Protection will report to the Vice President for Finance / 1Alh and Business / Treasure through the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and the Assistant Vice President for Safety and Environmental Services. This l change to a different vice president will not change the radiation safety program.

The present staff of the Health Physics Office will also be transferred to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and will be under the direction of the Manager of Radiation Protection. The staff will remain in the same location {

and perform the same radiation safety functions. The Manager of Radiation Protection will serve the University Isotopes Committee in the same manner as the University Health Physicist has served it.
