OF MARCH 18, 2021, PARTIALLY CLOSED MEETING WITH GLOBAL NUCLEAR FUEL AND THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGARDING HIGHER BURNUP ADVANCED BOILING WATER REACTOR FUELS (EPID L-2021-LRO-0009)

On March 18, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a partially closed teleconference meeting via Microsoft Teams with representatives from Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF). The purpose of the meeting was for GNF and the NRC staff to discuss plans for using higher burnup (HBU) advanced Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fuels. The meeting was noticed on March 5, 2021, and is available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML21064A228. This meeting is a follow-up to the February 2, 2021, meeting (ADAMS Accession No. ML21026A240) with Exelon, Southern Nuclear Company, and GNF on HBU BWR fuels.

During the open session of the meeting representatives from GNF provided an overview of GNF plan for Risk-Informed licensing for increasing the burnup limit for BWR fuels. There were no questions from members of the public during the open session. During the closed session of the meeting, GNF discussed Risk-Informed approach, submittal and approval strategy, and risk assessments for specific impacted analyses, and addressed the NRC staffs questions pertaining to its planned submittal of its HBU extension topical report. GNF and the NRC plan to have a follow-up meeting to complete the discussion on risk assessments for specific impacted analyses and high burnup core designs.
